CHAPTER SIXTEEN

“DONE SO SOON?” DCI Stanton asked them, almost mockingly. Thea squeezed Inspector Thayne’s arm tighter, wanting very much to strike Stanton across his smug face. Inspector Thayne reached his other hand up, resting it over hers and rubbing it gently until she relaxed her grip.

Inspector Thayne nodded. “Yes, I do believe we have all we need.”

He smirked at them. “Good. That’s excellent.”

“Yes. Thank you for all your help, Inspector,” Inspector Thayne said, offering his free hand out to shake the other man’s. Stanton took it and shook it firmly.

“Are you both heading back now?”

“Yes. Though I’m afraid I’ve been recalled to London. You know how this line of work is,” he said. Thea glanced at him, trying to pretend like she knew about this, like he hadn’t sprung this on her.

Constable Cooke came down the hallway whistling. He carried a tray of tea and sandwiches as he headed towards Molly’s cell. Inspector Stanton frowned.

“Where are you taking that, Constable?” he asked.

“To Miss Forbes, sir. She hadn’t eaten.”

The older man seemed like he might protest for a moment, before he remembered that Thea and Inspector Thayne were standing there.

“Very good, Constable. Continue.”

The younger man nodded, dipping his head to acknowledge both of them. DCI Stanton unlocked the door and opened it again for the man to enter.

“Well, I’ll let you go,” he said, turning back to them. “If I have any other questions when I’m finalizing the paperwork, I’ll let you know.”

Inspector Thayne gave him a curt nod before he turned around and led her out of the police station.
